UH to receive $24.8 million grant to combat childhood obesity

HONOLULU—The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will accept a $24.8 million grant to guide a children’s obesity prevention program and policy development in Hawaii and the Pacific region. The five-year competitive grant, the only one of its kind nationwide, will be awarded by the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

USDA NIFA Director Roger Beachy and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsak will deliver congratulatory remarks by videotape. U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, and Dean Sylvia Yuen will speak.
