Fukunaga fills council vacancy

Carol Fukunaga, a former state senator who lost her office in a redestricting fight, won the Honolulu City Council District 6 seat Tuesday night.

Fukunaga’s nearest competitor was Sam Aiona – another former state legislator – whom she beat by four percentage points, for a total of grand total of 8,383 votes.

The new councilmember-elect led a crowded race of 16 individuals vying to fill a seat vacated by new Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

Fukunaga received considerable assistance from Pacific Resource Partnership, the political action committee that won notoriety for its support of Kirk Caldwell over former Governor Ben Cayetano for Honolulu mayor.
