October 16: Haleiwa Jodo Mission holds annual craft fair

Jade Eckardt

The Haleiwa Jodo Mission is holding its annual craft fair on Saturday, October 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Just in time for the holidays, booths will be selling many items including beaded jewelry, ornaments, and other handmade crafts. Baked goods, sushi, shaved ice, and bento lunches will also be available.

For community members interested in selling crafts please call (808) 637-4382 or email [email protected].

The Haleiwa Jodo Mission holds what they consider their “main” events each year. These events include the O-bon service for ancestors, Shoryo-nagashi, and Bon-dancing from July to August, Mochitsuki (pounding boiled rice) service at the end of December, a sushi sale and Father’s Day service in June, a Memorial Day service in May, and the visiting and cleaning graveyards from June to July.

The Haleiwa Jodo Mission was founded at its present location under the name of Haleiwa Buddhism Kyokaido in 1903. The name was changed after extended reconstruction of the main hall.
