Only a small percentage – 15%, approximately – of the food consumed in Hawaii is produced here. According to a 2008 Hawaii State Department of Agriculture study, “Food Self-Sufficiency in Hawai`i,”, 85% to 90% of our food is imported, making Hawaii “particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and global events that might disrupt shipping and the food supply.”
