Waipio All-Stars headed to Little League World Series, Ewa All-Stars capture PONY Bronco title

Hawaii baseball youth continue to represent on the national stage

HONOLULU—Hawaii’s young baseball talent made a name on the national stage again this week as the Waipio All-Stars captured the Little League West Region title on Sunday, earning its third trip to the Little League World Series, and the Ewa All-Stars captured the PONY Bronco (ages 11-12) World Series in Monterey, California on Thursday.

The Waipio team beat out Ocean View from Southern California in a 4-1 victory in the West Region final at Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino, California Down 0-1, Waipio scored 4 runs in the fourth inning.

Teams from Hawaii have won the Little League World Series twice in the past five years—Waipio won in 2008 and Ewa Beach won in 2005. The World Series will be played August 20 to 29 at the Little League International complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Ewa All-Stars beat Tamiami, Florida in the final, 6-3, coming from behind in the bottom of the fifth to score five runs. The Ewa team won all six games in the World Series, beating teams from Tamiami, Florida; Chinese Taipei; Caguas, Puerto Rico; Salinas and Blossom Valley, California, and Oak Parks, Illinois.

Team members are Justin Areola, Darren Gallano, Garrison Gamil, Kainoa Ganancial, Dorrien Hermosura, Jobe Ibana, Ian Kahaloa, Christian James Laroco, Jake Mendoza, Gaston Palipti, Rusty Pascua, Dewayne Sprinkel, Chase Wago, and Hugh Yamashiro. The coaches are Randall Wago, Dean Ibana, Greg Palipti, and Shag Hermosura.

Maui won the PONY Bronco World Series title in 2001.
