HONOLULU — On Saturday, May 7th, the Ethnic Studies Student Association (ESSA) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and Go Getters will be hosting “Study Break 2011: Prometheus Brown & Bambu Live in Hawai‛i,” a hip-hop concert featuring artists whose music focuses on critical commentary of socio-political issues at Blue Ocean Thai Restaurant. The purpose of this event is to provide access to a different form of social expression to university students as well as community members.

For artist Bambu, this concert will be part of his Smugglers Tour, which celebrates the release of “Short Changed,” a re-release of “Exact Change” with an additional set of new songs. Both artists Bambu and Prometheus Brown will also be performing songs from their upcoming new album, “Walk Into A Bar.” Prometheus Brown with his music partner Sabzi make up Blue Scholars and their third full- length album “Cinematroplis” is set to be released in June.

“Study Break 2011: Prometheus Brown & Bambu Live in Hawai‛i” will take place at Blue Ocean Thai Restaurant located at 327 Keawe Street, Honolulu 96813. It will be an 18 and over event that will feature the artists Prometheus Brown from Blue Scholars and Bambu. In addition, the following Hawai‛i artists will also be performing: Seph1, Lady Paisley, the Prolific Unknowns, and the Broke Mokes. DJ Packo will be spinning for the evening.

ESSA is a student organization from multidisciplinary backgrounds that works in collaboration with the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of Hawai‛i at Mānoa to promote awareness and interest in Ethnic Studies, its Major and Certificate programs, and other academic events promoted by the department. ESSA also functions independently to bring enjoyable social activities and events that allow students and the community to interact with and engage in a dialogue about culture, identity, and socio-political issues that are explored in ES courses and in everyday life.
