NY Times critic pans a revisionist Hawaii history
New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani has reviewed the book Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell, a retelling of colonialism in Hawaii and the Amercanization of the islands. Kakutani acknowledges the author’s narrative and descriptive skills, but ultimately pans the book, calling it “cutesy pie,” “self-important,” and “annoying,” and asks the question “who cares?”
