Kona farmers concerned about genetically modified coffee company

Kona growers and others see Integrated Coffee’s genetically modified coffee as a threat to small farmers. In 2008, the Hawaii County Council banned genetically modified coffee on the Hawaii island, but the Legislature rejected a state-wide ban. Seattle Times’ Melissa Allison brings up Hawaii Island’s situation as the Food and Drug Administration considers this week allowing the production of genetically modified salmon, which, if allowed, would not be labeled as such and would be the first genetically altered animal allowed as food in the United States.
