City’s Junior Lifeguard program registration begins

HONOLULU—The City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division will begin accepting online registrations for the 2011 Junior Lifeguard Program on Saturday, April 9, 2011. The course is for future lifeguards and will be taught this summer during five-day sessions at four locations across Oahu.

The Junior Lifeguard Program is open for boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 17 as of Wednesday, June 1. Beach skills, ocean training, surf rescue techniques, physical conditioning, swimming, CPR, first aid, and other related activities will be taught. Applicants must have good swimming skills and a strong desire to learn about ocean safety. This is not a learn-to-swim program.

The course will be held at Ala Moana Beach Park, Kalama Beach Park (Kailua), Ehukai Beach Park (Pipeline), and Makaha Beach Park. There will be 7 sessions; Session 1: June 6-10; Session 2: June 13-17; Session 3: June 20-24; Session 4: June 27-July 1; Session 5: July 5- 8; Session 6: July 11-15; Session 7: July 18-22. Junior Lifeguard Championships will be held on Sat., July 30, 2011 at Hapuna Beach, Hawaii Island.

Online registration begins April 9 at www.myjuniorguards.com.

On-site registration is from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Ala Moana Beach Park on Saturday, April 23 at the Ocean Safety Training Center; Kalama Beach Park in Kailua on Saturday, April 23; Ehukai Beach Park on Saturday, April 30 at Pupukea Foodland; and Makaha on Saturday, April 30 at Tamura’s Superette, Waianae.

There is a suggested donation of $45 made payable to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association that will be collected during on-site registration and online payments will be processed through Kama`aina Kids. Do not send waivers or checks.
