City announces Earth Month teen video contest winners

The City’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV), in sponsorship with Lex Brodie’s Tire Company, GeoTech Solutions and KHON, announced today the winners of the 3rd Annual Earth Month Teen Video Contest.

Videos were submitted by Campbell High, Farrington High, Kapolei High, Waipahu High, and Waianae Intermediate. Each entry presented a meaningful storm water pollution prevention message, focusing on nutrients, sediment and automobile fluids.

Prizes were awarded for category winners and the Best in Show.

Joshua Saludez, an 18-year-old senior at Kapolei High, won Best in Show for his video “Thirsty” and received $1,500 from Lex Brodie’s Foundation. Saludez was sponsored by his teacher, Daryl Madela.

Category winners of $500 from GeoTech Solutions are:

Sediment: “Runoff Drop” by Desiree Kamikawa and Hipo Luab, Farrington High. Ms. Christine Ho, Sponsoring Teacher;

Nutrients: “Mutants from Nutrients” by Von Dickens Ulsa and Victor Tran, Farrington High. Ms. Christine Ho, Sponsoring Teacher ;

Automobile Fluids: “Carma” by Marifel DeVera, Austin Wandasan, Markie Belmodis, Kehau Achiu, and Jessica Bragg, Campbell High. Mr. Oscar Ramiscal, Sponsoring Teacher.

The winners will be recognized at the Earth Month Mauka to Makai Expo, 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Waikiki Aquarium Theatre. During April, winning videos will air on KHON, KITV, Hawaii News Now and Olelo. Videos will also be shown in select Satellite City Halls.
