ArtSpree returns to The Contemporary Museum

HONOLULU—The 18th annual ArtSpree, The Contemporary Museum’s free day-long art jamboree, returns July 9 with a new lineup of artists, activities, and performers.

On the museum’s grounds, children participate in artist-guided, hands-on activities as performance artists, spoken-word artists, bands, DJs and dance troupes share their talents throughout the day.

Here’s the lowdown.

Art activities and artists

Over, Under, Weaving with nationally recognized artist Alison Moritsugu.

Clay with Pamala Tagariello, Rayna Galati, and Marti Sellars.

Face painting with Dana Teruya Len.

Paper bead jewelry with Kaycie Baltunado.

Manga printmaking with Pen and Ink Works.

Recycled art sculpture with Mark Chai and Jackie Mild Lau.

Music

Starr Kalahiki: This chanteuse who glides effortlessly between jazz standards and rock will soon release her debut CD.

Hope Mayo: The Wahiawa native has been compared to Norah Jones, and she shares her alt-folky tunes.

DJ Silvana: The Italian DJ spins her trademark minimal, deep, downtempo trip hop.
Clones of the Queen: The downtown darlings play their electronic pop.

Otis Schaper: The singer-songwriter plays his breezy acoustic guitar tunes.

Spoken word

Tui Scanlan: The spoken-word poet and Youth Speaks Hawaii mentor has performed at the Nuyorican Poets Café.

Darron Cambra: The spoken-word poet hosts Bringing Back Kerouac at Anna O’Brien’s

Jocelyn Ng: The 21-year-old competed in last year’s National Poetry Slam and appeared on HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices.

Dance and performance

Hyper Squad & Jr Hype: Waipuahi dance studio troupe.

Dancers Unlimited: This dance troupe aims to offer opportunities for youth.
Heartbeat: A program of the 24-7 Danceforce Studio.

Living Windows: Artist to be announced.

Cherry Blossom Cabaret: The burlesque revue tones it down for a family-friendly performance.

Todd H. Oumi: Known as “the Alterreign Vehicle,” this performance-based artist uses dance, music, painting and sculpture as a vehicle to create worlds.

Guilherme Alves: This DeRose Method instructor and surfer astounds people with his athletic, gravity-defying poses.

Pro Network: A newly formed alliance of dance professionals.

Dance Artistry: A dance school.

Art

The Contemporary Museum’s gallery will be open. On view are two exciting exhibitions:

Darren Waterston: Forest Eater
Ernesto Pujol: Walking Ground

Food: Special menu at the Contemporary Café

The Hale Aina award-winning Contemporary Café will have a special ArtSpree menu of veggie burgers, chili, beef stew, pulled-pork sandwiches, hot dogs, Greek salad, watermelon, corn on the cob, and gelato.

Free shuttle service

Visitors can park free at Punahou School and hop on a free shuttle bus, which runs continuously between the school and the museum. Visitors can enter Punahou School through the main gate, located at the corner of Wilder Avenue and Punahou Street.

Public parking and drop-off is prohibited at the museum. Parking along the streets of the surrounding neighborhood is also not permitted. Visitors who require special assistance can make prior arrangements with the museum by calling (808) 526-1322 x10.
