HONOLULU—The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) responded this evening to a sanitary sewer overflow in the Manoa area.

The call came in at 5:40 p.m. An ENV crew arrived at the scene at 6:35 p.m. with the site secured at 7:00 p.m.

A10-inch terra cotta pipe backed up as the cause of the spill is still under investigation. An estimated 2,400 gallons of untreated wastewater came out of manhole fronting 2112 Metcalf Street. Approximately 2,300 made its way into a storm drain that eventually leads to the Ala Wai Canal, while 100 gallons dissipated into the ground.

ENV notified the State Department of Health. Signing and water sampling will begin in the morning.
