2,000 gallons of raw sewage come out of Palolo manhole
HONOLULU—The Department of Environmental Services responded last night to a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) in Palolo. The call came in at 6:45 p.m. with the crew arriving at 7:25 p.m. and secured the site at 7:45 p.m.
The SSO occurred at 3472 Kaau Street when a 6-inch terra cotta pipe clogged with grease causing 2,000 gallons of raw wastewater out a manhole. An estimated 1,000 gallons made its way into a storm drain at the corner of 9th Avenue and Kaau Street that leads to Palolo Stream with the remaining 1,000 gallons dissipating into the ground.
The Department of Health has been notified. The crew cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized the affected area. Signing and sampling was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
