138th Annual King Kamehameha Celebration this weekend

The King Kamehameha Celebration Commission has released the following events information regarding this year’s June 11 statue lei-draping and the 94th annual floral parade on June 12.

Friday, June 11—Lei-draping

Women of ‘Ahahui Ka’ahumanu will string plumeria lei from 8:00 a.m. in front Aliiolani Hale; featuring music by the Royal Hawaiian Band; a procession of the royal societies to the statue at 11:00 a.m.; hula kahiko and oli will accompany the traditional protocol at 11:30 a.m.; speeches in Hawaiian and English commemorating Kamehameha the Great and his legacy and ho‘okupu to follow.

Saturday, June 12—Parade

Starts at 9:00 a.m. at Ft. DeRussy, along Kalakaua before turning left in the makai lane of Ala Moana Blvd., proceeding to Punchbowl and then onto King Street. Hoolaulea to follow at Iolani Palace with educational exhibits, cultural demonstrations, and parade awards at the Coronation Pavilion. This year, the perpetual trophies were made by famed koa artisans, Martin & MacArthur and include Best Float, Best Decorated Vehicle, Best Marching Band and Best Pau Unit.
This year’s parade honorees are: Mr. Colin K?hea Chock, II as M?‘?; Wailana, Hoakalei Hina, & ‘Iolani Kamauu as Grand Marshals; Mr. William Aila, Sr. as P?‘? Marshal; & Ms. Leiala Cook as P?‘? Queen.
