Kapolei Public Library takes part in celebrating ‘The Works of Edward Gorey’

In honor and celebration “Musings of Mystery and Alphabets of Agony: The Works of Edward Gorey,” the Hawaii State Public Library System will host many different events and activities at libraries across the island through the end of the year.

Edward Gorey was a popular American author and artist known for his distinctly stylish, and mysterious black-and-white illustrations.

A main exhibition will be on display at the University of Hawaii Art Gallery through December 10. The exhibition features over 700 books, book jackets, prints, posters, original drawings, postcards, handmade dolls, and other works from the John A. Carollo-Edward Gorey Collection in the UH Manoa Library’s Special Research Collections.

The Kapolei Public Library will hold two events to celebrate Gorey’s work. On On Saturday October 9, there will be a children’s story time featuring Gorey’s work that includes a craft activity held by the UH Art Gallery staff. Also on Saturday, Shannon Leitch, a curatorial graduate assistant at the UH Manoa Art Gallery, will hold a do-it-yourself bookmaking presentation for anyone 10 and older.
