Hawaii Charter Schools

Background

Hawaii’s public charter schools are operated and managed by independent governing boards. They operate under a performance contract with the State Public Charter School Commission. Unlike in the continental United States, charter schools in Hawaii are largely focused on Hawaiian linguistic and cultural immersion and tend to be well-managed and successful, instilling values of respect for natural resources and for indigenous culture in a new generation of young people.
