Shakey’s Pizza Parlor fires up its ovens in Hawaii after a 30-year hiatus

Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, a popular hang-out for friends and families in the '60s, makes its long awaited return to Hawaii.

WAIPAHU -- Driving through Waipahu Town, you find yourself passing by dozens of colorful fast food restaurants and local eateries that have lasted through the years. Names like Leeward Drive-Inn, Poke Stop, and Tanioka’s are neighborhood staples. A stop by Waipahu Town Center, however, will bring you something new -- and old. The California-based Shakey’s Pizza Parlor opened its doors in Waipahu on February 24. After a 30-year hiatus, the national pizza chain has returned to Hawaii. Shakey’s first came to Hawaii in 1964 and was a popular place for friends and family to get together, enjoy some pizza, cold drinks, and music.

Recipe: Ohio Peanut butter pie-o

Ohio natives, pictured above, shared some secrets to making sweets with The Hawaii Independent's resident food guru, David Hadway.

HONOLULU -- This recipe was sent to me all the way from Ohio. Giselle Tiu, former accounts regulator and current World of Warcraft addict, has found the time to accumulate some wonderful recipes over the years. Thanks to the marvel of modern technology, we continue to share our love of food with each other online. Through non-electronic mail, she sent me some wonderful caramel brownies, which arrived about about 3 weeks after she sent them. Fearless as I am, gave them a try. The brownies were great on the inside, but after 3 weeks the outside had become a bit dry. That said, you can't beat caramel and chocolate goodness.

Sunday Gravy

This recipe was submitted to The Hawaii Independent's Remixed Plate by Maui Namahoe as a "Sunday" meal because of the cooking time. Everyone is in such a rush these days it would be nice to at least once a month sit down with friends and family to watch the games, grind, and have have a relaxing weekend. This is one of those recipes. It sounds great and I can't wait to eat it this weekend.
